What To Look For In A Dryer For Your Turnout Gear

Turnout GearSo you need a reliable dryer in order to dry your turnout gear, but you're not sure what to look for in a dryer.  Two things are for certain: not all dryers are created equal, and the industry’s finest models are found at Williams Direct Dryers™.  Since the creation of its first boot dryer in 1989, the company has set a standard in drying that has made it the choice for first those in need of optimum drying power for duty gear, fire equipment, hazmat suits, wet and dry suits, boots and gloves, and more.  As such, the professionals at Williams Direct Dryers™ are proud to offer you the consumer a few helpful tips on what to look for when you look for a dryer.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets guidelines for duty gear dryers to adhere to, and it is essential that the dryer you choose adheres to NFPA guidelines. In order to be NFPA friendly a dryer should use forced air only and should employ a non-tumble style.  This non-mechanical style is known as direct drying.  In addition, all dryers must be electrically inspected and approved by either Underwriter's laboratories (UL), a global product compliance source, or CSA, also a leading provider of product testing and services.

Your dryer should be able to dry gear out between incidents and after training without having to be washed out first.  Why is this important?  Because wet gear is thermally unstable and may be unsafe to use during an incident. Keep in mind that regular drying will improve the overall usable life of your gear while helping to greatly reduce the adverse health effects and materials caused by bacteria and mildew.

Finally, your dryer’s warmed air must not exceed 105 degrees fahrenheit.  And your dryer should have a mechanism to shut off the heating element, allowing for the use of ambient air to dry. While important from a standpoint of energy conservation, this also allows for safe operation of the dryer at higher ambient temperatures when used in non air conditioned locations.

Keep these points in mind when choosing a dryer, keeping in mind also that these qualities and many more are front and center in every Williams Direct Dryer.Learn more about Williams Direct Dryers'™ NFPA compatible, tough and highly durable dryers.
